When it comes to virtual reality (VR) headsets, one is likely to picture bulky devices that almost cover the entire face. But tech giant Meta is about to bring a completely new experience through the unveiling of a new device in the form of glasses that will completely change the entire concept.
Unveiled recently during the Meta Connect event at its headquarters, the most notable thing about this device, which has been called the "Meta VR Glasses," is its lightness of just 100 grams. The device, priced at $1,300, is expected to hit the U.S. market next year.
Why Are the Meta VR Glasses So Light?
In order to solve the problem of discomfort arising from long-term use of traditional VR helmets, Meta has set itself the task of making its product as light as possible and comfortable to wear like regular glasses. As reported by the company’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the conference, the glasses weigh 100 grams, being less than one-fifth the weight of the Meta Quest 3.
The secret of such a significant decrease in weight lies in a unique design. The frames are equipped only with displays and necessary sensors, while heavy devices, including the processor, battery, and memory, are installed in a small external module called "Puck."
Meta VR Glasses have the 5K resolution "Infinite Display" of Micro-OLED. The display has a resolution of 37 pixels per degree (PPD), which makes the text and images displayed really sharp. Pancake optics are used in order to provide the best optical experience in such a small device.
Meta AI is built-in into the operating system in such a way that the user can control the device with eyes, voice, and natural hand movements without using any physical controllers.
Cinematic Viewing and Practical Design
When it comes to movies and videos, the Meta VR Glasses allow one to enjoy cinematic viewing. With a Dolby Vision enabled display that comes with spatial audio through Dolby Atmos, users will be able to experience both a large virtual screen and realistic surrounding sound.
These glasses are different from other VR glasses since they do not cut the user off from their surroundings. In addition, they have an open design and use passthrough cameras that enable users to view their surroundings while using the virtual screen.
Using AI technology, the Meta VR Glasses enable the users to perform everyday activities in the office with ease such as accessing applications directly, switching to virtual work spaces and performing online searches without any physical controller.
The performance of the device is based on the Snapdragon Reality Elite Processor by Qualcomm. This is backed by the battery which offers three hours of working time after a full charge.
